Brits are squandering a whopping £600 a year on shop-bought meals instead of making their own, according to a new survey from baker Warburtons. Find out how you can save £3,000 a year by making a packed lunch and following our other simple cost-cutting ideas

With the credit crunch forcing us to be more frugal, it comes as a surprise that many of us aren’t making simple changes to our spending that could save us thousands of pounds over the course of a year.

According to a recent survey by Warburtons the baker, working adults spend an average of £2.50 each day on lunch – that works out at approximately £580 a year, taking holidays into consideration.

“It’s no secret we spend unnecessary amounts of money on ready-made lunches,” says Jessica Bowker, a spokesperson for the company, “but it’s staggering when you find out exactly how much is spent.”

Half the people surveyed said they were making more packed lunches now compared to this time last year. However, 57% of men said they still spend the same on shop-bought lunches.

The research, based on a survey of 1,800 adults as part of the Warburtons’ Save Tons on Lunch campaign, suggested that making just one sandwich a week would reduce your working-life lunch bill by a staggering £4,800. Put like that it certainly gives you food for thought when it comes to making cost-saving decisions.

If you’ve been forced to tighten your purse strings as a result of the credit crunch, taking a packed lunch to work is only one way you could cut your weekly spending and save hundreds of pounds a year by making the smallest of changes to your lifestyle. We show you how
